The region has attracted the attention of naturalists since the 1700s. The first evidence and descriptions of the Gotthard and Piora coincide chronologically with the beginning of the Naturalist’s interests in the mountains and the birth of mountaineering itself. The first scientific research carried out in Piora dates back from the second half of the 1800s to the early 1900s. Since then there have been over 400 monographs and articles published in professional journals. The works take into consideration the flora, fauna, hydrobiology and technical issues related to hydropower and fisheries management in mountain lakes. This leads to a wealth of knowledge that is difficult to find in other regions as naturalistically valuable. This data also offers the advantage of being able to provide an evolutionary interpretation on current survey results.
